TRAVEL ASSISTANCE TO ISAG--CHICKEN WINGS ACROSS THE WATER
As noted previously, the XXV International Conference on Animal Genetics, sponsored by the International Society of Animal Genetics, will be held at the Vinci Congress Centre, Tours, France, on July 21-25, 1996. The abstract deadline is April 15. If you need further information on the ISAG meeting, contact ISAG@biotec.jouy.inra.fr for application forms or further details. Limited travel support is available from the Coordination effort to fund travel to the ISAG meeting by poultry gene map pers. If interested in travel support for ISAG, email 22314jbd@msu.edu as soon as possible. First come, first serve.

GAIL JUVIK MOVES WEST TO YEAST
Farewell and best wishes to Gail Juvik who has recently left her position at the National Agricultural Library working on animal genome database development to move to the Saccharomyces Genome Database at Stanford University. The NAL nodes of the existing databases, including Chickgbase, will continue to be maintained by Gary McCone's group at the Library. Discussion is on-going with regard to how to keep the momentum going on animal database development.

CRITT MOVES TO BADGER STATE (SO THAT WE BADGER HIM LESS OFTEN?)
While we're on the subject of moving, Lyman and Margaret Crittenden are planning to move to the Madison, Wisconsin area this summer to be closer to family and, especially, the grandchildren. Although we in East Lansing will miss them a lot, we wish them the very best in this enterprise. We will continue to stay in touch with Critt on coordination and other issues, but more often electronically as opposed to in person. Hopefully there will also be occasional visits both ways.

HELP! It has been noted that the Searchable Mail List on the WWW Homepage (http://poultry.mph.msu.edu) is out of date, due primarily to changes in email addresses. Please check out your entry and, if corrections are needed, use the Poultry Newsgroup Registration feature or just email Scott Eisensmith at eisensmi@poultry.mph.msu.edu with the corrections.

ONLY 252 WRITING DAYS LEFT UNTIL THE NC-168 RENEWAL IS DUE: As noted in the last newsletter, the next NC-168 project renewal will be due (with all relevant sign-offs, etc.) on Dec. 9, 1996. Sue Lamont has developed a detailed timeline that will allow us to meet this goal. Ed Smith is in charge of writing up the review of the previous project accomplishments, and the "Objective Chairpersons" are: Jerry Dodgson (Obj. 1), Doug Foster (Obj. 2) and Bill Muir (Obj. 3). An added complication th is round is that NC-168 will not meet again until after the deadline date, so we will need you all to provide requested input electronically or by mail. The first priority is to identify any new potential NC-168 members beyond the existing group. If you have suggestions about new members, please email Sue at sjlamont@iastate.edu

NC-168 OBJECTIVE 1: a first draft. As designated Objective 1 author, I proposed the draft new Objective 1 below in the last newsletter which has yet to elicit commentary. Please let me know (22314jbd@msu.edu) of suggested alternatives or changes to this draft.

Existing Objective 1, NC-168: Identify, characterize and map poultry genes by molecular and classical methods. Draft "new" Objective 1, NC-168: Utilize modern molecular and breeding technologies to identify, locate, isolate and characterize poultry genes of economic importance.

MEETING NEWS

Plans for the next NAGRP and NC-168 meetings, January12-16, 1997, San Diego, CA.
PLANT AND ANIMAL GENOME V (PAG-V)

As noted last time, the next NAGRP meeting will be held in January, 1997 in San Diego as a coalition with the on-going Plant Genome meetings traditionally held at that time and place. It is anticipated that the NC-168 Station Reports and Business Meeting (and the Poultry Subcommittee of NRSP-8) will occur on Sunday, January 12. (Fly in Saturday for low rates.) PAG-V will include Plenary Sessions in areas such as New Technologies, QTLs, Gene Discovery and Characterization, Comparative Map Based Analysis, Gene and Chromosome Organization, and Genome Diversity. Poster Sessions and the combined NRSP-8 (NAGRP) Business Meeting will also be included. Advance registration will be $325 ($100 for predoctoral students). More information will be forthcoming from the planning committee (Gretel Dentine, Hans Cheng, and Max Rothschild). Mark your calendars now.
